Dashboard: Widget editing
🎯 Overview
Section titled “🎯 Overview”Editing a widget allows you to adjust its configuration after it has already been added to the dashboard. Compared to creating a widget, the first step is skipped:
- For Data Widgets, you cannot change the Source or Account.
- For Text Widgets, you cannot change the Widget Type.
From that point onward, the editing steps are identical to the creation steps (starting at what was previously step 2).
A new Finish button is available, allowing you to save changes immediately without clicking through all steps.
📑 Merge Widgets (Data Widgets Only)
Section titled “📑 Merge Widgets (Data Widgets Only)”When editing a Data Widget, an additional section appears below the form:
- Label: Merge Widgets
- Behavior:
- Lists all widgets from the same Source that share the same Dimension.
- If the widget has no dimension, it lists all other widgets without a dimension.
- Purpose: Enables merging multiple widgets into one, consolidating metrics for easier comparison and visualization.
📑 Editing a Merged Widget
Section titled “📑 Editing a Merged Widget”When two or more Data Widgets are merged, editing them behaves differently:
-
Separate Forms
- Each merged widget is shown as its own form, stacked one below the other (in 1st step only).
- Every form has a Separate Widget button, except the first one.
- Clicking Separate Widget removes that instance from the merged group.
-
Dimension Control
- The Dimension field can only be changed on the first widget in the merged group.
- If the merged widgets are not from the same Source, the dimension cannot be changed (or set) at all.
-
Title Prefix
- A new field called Title Prefix is added.
- Each widget instance in the merged group must have a unique title prefix.
- This ensures that if multiple widgets share the same metrics, they can still be distinguished in the merged display.
-
Step Flow
- The first step in editing is the same as step 2 when creating a widget (since source/account cannot be changed).
- The second step is the same as before, with no separate options per instance — all merged widgets share the same configuration flow beyond the first step.
⚙️ Editing Workflow
Section titled “⚙️ Editing Workflow”- Click the Edit button in the widget header.
- The widget flips to the configuration view.
- Adjust relevant fields (title, size, format, metrics, text, uploads, filters, etc.).
- Use Finish to save changes immediately, or navigate through steps if needed.
- For Data Widgets, optionally select widgets in the Merge Widgets section to combine them.
- If editing a merged widget, adjust Title Prefix for each instance and manage dimensions only on the first widget.
- Use Separate Widget to split out any instance from the merged group.
⚠️ Key Notes
Section titled “⚠️ Key Notes”- Editing is non-destructive: existing data or text remains unless explicitly changed.
- Expand (quick resize) and move handle changes are saved automatically, but can also be adjusted via Edit.
- For Data Widgets, editing metrics, dimensions, or filters may significantly alter the displayed chart and comparisons.
- For Text Widgets, editing the text field supports Markdown, HTML, and iframe embedding.
- Historic Text Widgets require careful date range management — groups only appear if overlapping with the dashboard’s active date range.
- Merge Widgets is unique to Data Widgets and provides a way to consolidate multiple widgets from the same source/dimension context.
- When editing merged widgets, Title Prefix must be unique per instance, and Dimension changes are restricted to the first widget (and only if all share the same source).
